London Home Renovations

Devonstone Refurb

Working for a valued repeat client with a typical compact London terrace, we were asked to help convert their attic space into a home office and redesign their bathroom.

The conversion presented many challenges that we needed to address before we confidently go ahead; the existing headroom was less than two meters, there wasn’t enough space for a full staircase and there was no door between the living room and ground floor staircase; combined with a small bathroom, a brief for a bath and shower and the desire to live at home whilst works were ongoing.

In order to realise the headroom for home office, we were able to reinforce the old ceiling joists without breaking the ceiling and successfully got planning permission to raise the ridge height. A pigeon staircase was fitted above the existing stair and the installation of a glass smoke screen on the ground floor enable us to avoid a new door. For the space itself, we designed a plywood clad room, exposing the brick gable where we could and designing in movable furniture, storage and concealed lighting.

Not only was this cheaper than a conventional build, it created a warm and softer space. The bathroom reconfiguration achieved the ‘industrial-chic’ brief given to us by using simple white tiles complemented with black fittings and exposed timber. We  commissioned a local joiner to build bespoke cabinetry and shelving to complete the room. By using more cost-effective accents, we were able to buy good quality sanitaryware providing a beautiful finished product.

OUR CLIENT'S STORIES

"As both of us work regularly from home, and with the arrival of lockdown in 2020, our home office space had become extremely unfeasible and cluttered, which then seeped into the rest of the house. We felt cramped, penned in and never invited guests over.

The loft office has exceeded our expectations completely. We have two desks, ample room for storage and most importantly a serene space that makes us love going to work in the mornings! Its enabled us to reclaim the rest of the house too, and being able to close the door at the end of the day helps us maintain our work life balance."
