Family House

A sustainable replacement dwelling

This project proposes a carefully considered replacement family home that brings together vernacular cues and contemporary design to create a confident yet contextual architectural response. Designed to exceed current codes of practice for construction, sustainability and energy performance. the new dwelling establishes a long term, future proofed approach to family living.

The siting and massing of the house are the keys to its success. Set back within the plot, the building maintains the established rhythm of the street, preserving important glimpses between dwellings and reinforcing a sense of openness within the public realm. The articulated form breaks down the overall mass, ensuring the house sits comfortably within its surroundings whilst strengthening the consistency of the streetscape.

The scheme prioritises high-quality architectural and urban design, enhancing the immediate built environment through ecologically responsible construction techniques and materials. Internally, the home is designed to provide generous amenity and a flexible living environment tailored to the needs of its owners. The result is a contemporary family home that reinterprets local character through a modern lens. Architecturally assured, environmentally conscious, and a positive new asset to the area.

This project proposes a carefully organised family home arranged across three levels, bringing together generous communal living spaces and more private accommodation to create a balanced and functional domestic environment. The internal layout has been designed to respond to the needs of contemporary family life, allowing for both shared and independent use of spaces. Clear circulation and well-defined zones ensure that the dwelling operates efficiently while maintaining a sense of openness and comfort throughout.

The ground floor forms the primary living level of the house, accommodating the main social and day-to-day functions. An open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space is positioned to maximise light and views towards the garden and outdoor terrace, creating a strong connection between interior and exterior spaces. Supporting rooms and service areas are arranged around the central circulation core, allowing the main living spaces to remain open and flexible while maintaining a clear organisational structure within the plan.

The upper floors provide the more private areas of the home. Bedrooms, bathrooms, and additional family spaces are arranged around the central stair, ensuring efficient movement between levels while maintaining privacy and separation from the main living areas below. The result is a carefully planned home that balances openness with intimacy, creating a comfortable and adaptable environment for everyday family life while maintaining a clear architectural logic throughout the building.
