St Mary's
Contemporary Rear and Roof Extension to a Victorian Terraced House in Nunhead
Set within a traditional Victorian terrace in Nunhead, Peckham, this project reimagines St Mary’s through a carefully considered rear and roof extension, introducing contemporary living within a historic framework. Although the property lies outside a conservation area, the design approach remains sensitive to the established street character and its neighbouring context.
At ground level, a generous open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space extends the rear garden, creating a light-filled and fluid environment that strengthens the connection between interior and exterior. This intervention transforms the home into a more sociable and adaptable space for modern family life.
At roof level, a discreet rear dormer provides an additional bedroom and bathroom, enhancing both flexibility and long-term usability. The reconfiguration also introduces a new principal bedroom suite, complete with en-suite, supporting a more functional and future-proof layout.
Alongside spatial enhancements, the scheme incorporates upgraded insulation and a high-efficiency heat pump, significantly improving thermal performance and reducing overall energy demand. A carefully curated palette of contemporary materials, combined with a balanced composition of solid and glazed elements, ensures the new interventions are distinctly modern while remaining complementary to the original Victorian fabric.
